Sensational Story Magazines

The American sensational story magazines began publishing in the 1950's and were at their high point throughout the 1960's.  These were large format magazines, around 20 x 28 cms, and usually between 68 and 96 pages per issue. The contents were mostly supposedly factual stories of war-time heroism, adventures in exotic lcations, true crime etc, plus articles on odd subjects (a brief skim through a few issues brings up Female Wrestlers, Prostitution, Smuggling, the French Foreign Legion, Treasure Hunting, Motorcycle Outlaws etc.  The accent throughout is on perilous situations and often wicked women. These are illustrated with photographs and line drawings.   There are also black & white glamour photo sets, and pages of cool adverts.  I am just illustrating the covers of these magazine, but you can check out the contents of individual magazines from the details given on these covers.

The covers are usually coloured art-work and often feature lightly clad young women.  The "women in peril" and bondage artwork covers are particularly collected.

The covers are printed on glossy coated paper, but the contents were printed on cheap newsprint paper which is often a bit tanned after half a century.
