Luxor Press 'Yellowbacks'

Luxor Press was the creation of publisher Charles Skilton.  He began as a mainstream small scale publisher, under the Skilton imprint,  whose best known line was probably the series of Billy Bunter novels.
In the mid-1960's Mayflower Books were successfully prosecuted for publishing the erotic classic "Fanny Hill", the case receiving considerable publicity.

Skilton quickly brought out an expurgated edition of this "banned" book under the Luxor Press imprint, though he did not make clear that it was a bowdlerised version, and it went on to be a best seller. Seeing the commercial possibilities for marketing erotica which stayed within the law but with the implication that it was rather naughtier, Skilton  went on to  publish  many erotic titles through Luxor Press and allied imprints.

These usually had rather distinctive yellow covers and were slightly larger format than most  paperbacks of the time.   They normally were found in shops which sold men's magazines etc.  I do not ever recall seeing them in high-street chains such as W. H. Smiths.  These usually promised rather more than they delivered!
His business prospered and he went on to buy a rather fine country house
known (at least behind his back) by the publishing trade as "Fanny Hall"!
